Alchemy Software Development donates software to Dublin City University (DCU)

Donation to assist in expansion of School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies.

DUBLIN – April 11, 2006 – Alchemy Software Development Limited, the market leader in visual localization solutions, today announced that a donation of 100,000 Euro has been made to Dublin City University. This donation will assist in the on-going expansion of the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS) (http://www.dcu.ie/salis/index.shtml).

“Dublin City University is one of the most progressive colleges in Ireland and was one of the first to start teaching translation courses back in the 1980s”, said Robert Martin, International Sales Manager at Alchemy Software Development, “this software donation will help them continually expand their course curriculum and ensure that their students are familiar with the market leading technologies in software localization and engineering”.

“Interest in our translation and localization courses is on the increase”, said Sharon O'Brien, Lecturer at DCU, “and the donation from Alchemy Software Development will help us to keep our translation laboratory up-to-date in order to teach our students how best to utilize technology in localizing software applications and digital content. The students benefit by being familiar with the most up-to-date tools, while the industry benefits by having a pool of resources who are already familiar with the latest technologies.”

The School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS) at DCU has been teaching translation since the 1980s. One of the most popular programmes is the Graduate Diploma/MA in Translation Studies, which is part-funded by the Irish HEA (Higher Education Authority). The course attracts up to 40 post-graduate students every year from Ireland, Spain, Germany and France and the numbers are constantly increasing. The languages covered are French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Irish. As well as gaining intensive practical translation experience, students learn about translation technology and computerized terminology. They also opt for modules on software localization, audiovisual translation and corpus linguistics.
