Alchemy Software Development donates Alchemy CATALYST to University of Cologne
Alchemy CATALYST used to educate the next generation of localization professionals
DUBLIN – October 10, 2007 – Alchemy Software Development Limited, the market leader in visual localization solutions, today announced that a software donation of €170,000 has been made to Cologne University of Applied Sciences. This donation will assist in the on-going expansion of the Institute of Translation and Multilingual Communication (ITMK) within the Faculty of Information Sciences and Communication Studies (http://www.f03.fh-koeln.de/fakultaet/itmk/).
Founded in 1971, Cologne University of Applied Sciences is the largest university of its kind in Germany, and degrees in translation and interpreting have been offered from the very beginning, said Eric Anderson, Regional Sales Manager at Alchemy Software Development, this software donation will help them continually expand their course curriculum and ensure that their students are familiar with the market leading technologies in software localization and engineering.
Offering up-to-date university degree programs in specialized translation or terminology and language engineering requires a large variety of state-of-the-art technology, said Uwe Reinke, professor for language and translation technologies at ITMK, and the donation from Alchemy Software Development will help us to provide our students with the knowledge and skills they need for a successful career in the language industries.
With more than 1300 students ITMK is one of the leading training institutes for translators and interpreters in Germany. It was one of the first institutes that redesigned their traditional Graduate Diploma courses in translation and interpreting into a set of modern Bachelor and Master degree courses offering a broader range of study opportunities. Today, students can choose among the following programs: BA Multilingual Communication, BA Languages and Economics, MA Specialized Translation, MA Conference Interpreting, MA Terminology and Language Engineering, and MA International Management and Intercultural Communication. The new BA and MA programs at ITMK all prove very popular. On the BA Multilingual Communication, for instance, there were more than 1200 applicants for about 230 places available in the academic year 2006/2007. The languages offered are usually English, French and Spanish. As well as gaining intensive practical translation experience, students learn about translation technology, computerized terminology and software localization. The MA Terminology and Language Engineering, which started in October 2006, is the only degree course of its kind in Germany.
